Oral Hygiene: The Things You Didn’t Know About Toothbrushes

Posted .

Do you ever think about your toothbrush when you grab it to brush every morning and night? If not, you should! There are many things you probably didn’t know about toothbrushes. In fact, some details might even blow your mind! Our dentist, Dr. Roy A. Smith, is happy to tell you about your toothbrush by sharing some things you didn’t know, which are:

-The toothbrush is 5,000 years old. Back in the day, ancient civilizations used a stick with a frayed end to clean their teeth. Over time, the toothbrush changed and evolved. The handle was made from bone, wood, or ivory and the bristles were hairs of animals, like hogs and boars. The modern nylon-bristled toothbrush we use today was invented in 1938.

-Manual and electric toothbrushes can both clean your smile with the same effectiveness. This means it doesn’t matter which type of toothbrush you use. So, when selecting the oral hygiene tool to clean your chompers, feel free to choose whichever one you want.

-The toothbrush has a lifespan. That’s right—it doesn’t last forever. In fact, after you have used your toothbrush for 3-4 months, it’s time to replace it.
